The Army continually needs a multitude of adhesives with materials properties beyond the current state-of-the-art domain to optimize the protection defeat mechanism efficiencies of lightweight bonded armors. High loading rate mechanisms are poorly understood with performance limitations observed from commercially available aerospace or automotive grade adhesives. MIL-STD-3059 represents a forward looking screening standard to deliberately coincide with the timing of emergent life cycle adhesives technologies and to draw research and development attention to unique Army derived performance needs.
