Introduction & Objectives: Polymorphous light eruption (PLE) is an idiopathic autoimmune photodermatosis. Differential diagnosis from skin lesions of acute and subacute lupus erythematosus (LE) may be difficult. Development of LE in patients with typical PLE has been described as well. In a previous paper, we have reported that expression of interferon (IFN)-alpha by plasmacytoid dendritic cell (PDC) is found in LE skin lesions. Materials & Methods: 20 PLE patients (17 females, 3 males) and 7 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. All patients underwent the determination of the minimal erythemal dose and a photoprovocation test in order to confirm the diagnosis.
