GMOs breed 'superweeds', study says

A U.S. research team including scientists from seed giant Monsanto has identified major weed resistance trends resulting from the cultivation of herbicide-tolerant genetically modified (GMO) crops. The new study, entitled "Gene amplification confers glyphosate resistance in Amaranthus palmeri," identifies trends of "gene amplification as an herbicide resistance mechanism in a naturally occurring weed population" and spells out the long-term threats this presents for herbicide-resistant GMO crops.
