BP spill settlement tops $20bn

BP will pay a total of $20.8bn to settle US federal and state litigation over its role in the Gulf of Mexico Macondo oil spill in 2010. The Justice Department and five Gulf coast states filed the final agreement on 5 October, three months after BP revealed its initial terms (WPA,3 July, p2).
