Lymphadenopathy in children results from a benign infectious process in the majority of patients; however, a wide spectrum of infectious and noninfectious conditions can cause both inflammatory and noninflammatory lymph node enlargement. It is important to recognize the signs of a malignant process in order to initiate an early evaluation. In the absence of any symptoms and signs directly suggestive of a neoplastic process, close monitoring is essential to look for resolution of an enlarged node. If the node does not regress over a period of 4 weeks, it is important to get a biopsy to exclude malignancy.
