3D Systems New Solids Printer

3D Systems Corp. has begun US shipments of its long-awaited InVision rapid prototyping system. The system applies layer after layer of acrylic-based photopolymer (and wax for support) using a thermal inkjet process. It then cures each layer with ultraviolet light. The company says the unit improves material toughness, surface finish, removal, and clean up. The printer is squarely aimed at the growing computer aided design (CAD) solid modeler user base. "This enables existing 3-D CAD users to benefit from in-house rapid prototyping capabilities, significantly reducing time-to-market and overall product development costs," says 3D president/CEO Abe Reichental.
