In Finland, most of the peat produced is used as fuel. However, about 10 percent of the annual production is extracted for other purposes, such as a raw material for growing media, an absorbent litter or bedding for livestock, for composting, as well decomposed "compaction" peat, peat for insulating roads from frost and as a soil improver on farmlands. These applications are not so well-known to the general public in Finland and some of them are possibly also new to an international audience. The use of, what we call, environmental peat and its importance in environmental care in Finland has been reviewed recently in a report published by the Ruralia Institute of Helsinki University.
