Since commissioning in 1989 the Baoshan Iron & Steel Company's 3aosteel) 2050 mm hot strip mill as continuously increased both production and product quality. In spite of the strong current market conditions, the great competition and ever increasing requirements of customers regarding the variety and quality of the products, the mill has by far exceeded the planned 4 million t/year and achieved an actual figure of over 5 million t. Baosteel's success confirms the decisions taken 15 years ago in the careful election of the plant concept, in the detail design and manufacture and use of ten new technologies. The successful twelve years' production of the hot strip mill once again impressively confirms the thesis that science and technology provide the driving force for productivity. Baosteel operates a modern management system, incorporating a high concentration of excellent personnel in the areas of technology, works management, production and maintenance. Their active involvement in the areas of innovation, research and further education in conjunction with other Chinese specialists insures continuous and consistent advancement of the work in further development, modernization of the plant equipment and the technologies for the hot strip mill. All this has enabled the continuous success of the 2050 mm hot strip mill. This success is due to all the people participating in the plant concept, design, manufacture, construction, installation, operation, maintenance and management.
