More than half of Americans live in places with life-threatening pollution, according to an annual air quality study by the American Lung Association. State of the Air 2016, which assigns rankings by ozone level and both year-round and short-term particle pollution, identified Bakersfield, CA, as the city with the overall worst air, followed by another central California city, Visalia. Both finished in the top three for each air quality category. Los Angeles finished with the nation's worst ozone level for the 15th time in 16 years, while Bakersfield topped the short-term and year-round particle lists. The four worst cities in all categories are in California. Other cities finishing in the top 20 on all three charts were Modesto and El Centro, bothin central California.
