National parks in the service of nation building: the pioneering work of Lipa Yahalom and Dan Zur in Israel

In 1998, on the centenary of the Zionist movement1 and the fiftieth anniversary of the State of Israel, the Israel Prize was awarded to the landscape architects Lipa Yahalom and Dan Zur. The prize — the most important and prestigious in Israel — isgranted every year on the Day of Independence to individuals of outstanding achievement in their fields, or who have made a special contribution to Israeli society. In explaining their reasoning behind the award, the judges said: The life work of Lipa Yahalom and Dan Zur serves as a superb example of implementing the right solutions for landscape design of a distinctly Israeli character, which draws upon themes of the early settlement in modern-day Israel, the local topography and intimate knowledge ofwhat is the right vegetation for every given site.
