Four years ago, Firsteel Strip Mill Products invested ?5.5M in its flagship Kitson Steel service centre site to enable new leading-edge technology to build a solid base of contract work and then open up new markets through the development of new products and new applications. The transformation from traditional metal trader/stockholder to a service centre business driven by the twin aims of adding value through specialisation and total quality would thus be complete. Kitson Steel achieved its original production targets 18 months ahead of schedule, leading to the recent introduction of a third shift to meet demand and provide the capacity to undertake development work which is providing the higher margins necessary to fund future investment. Today, the majority of Kitson Steel's business is based on regular contracts which has allowed diversify caption into specialist areas at a faster rate than anticipated.
