A combined approach to preservation

A number of market forces are causing changes in how cosmetics are preserved. Increasing concern for the safety of ingredients in cosmetics has brought some widely used cosmetic preservatives under discussion. Paraben preservatives have been used for a long time to preserve the majority of cosmetics, not only to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi but also to support product shelf-life. There are good reasons why traditional preservatives like parabens have been so successful; they are cheap and effective. However, the personal care industry cannot be assured that these materials will remain acceptable to consumers and regulators in the future.
