Safety on the move

The middle school science curriculum offers many opportunities for hands-on activities for the study of force and motion. For example, one activity for teaching Newton's first law calls for a weight to be tied to a piece of string or fishing line. Students then twirl the string or line at a medium speed parallel to the ground and over their heads. Finally, they let go of the line and observe the motion of the system (TUSD 2014).
