Direct reduced iron (DRI) includingbriquette iron (HBI) has become increasingly called for as the needhigh quality feedmaterial grows in the iron andsteelindustry. Natural-gas-based Midrexa Direct ReductionProcess continues to progress offering higher productivity, larger capacities and low maintenance operation. In addition, new coal-based ironmaking technologies, FASTMET and FASMELT, have been developed for commercialproduction of ironunitusing iron ore fines and/ or iron bearingsteel mill waste materials, and a solid reductant such as coal. Collaboration of Kobe Steel Ltd and Midrex Direct Reduction Corporation carried out the development through the continuous operation of the FASTMET demonstration plant built at Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel, as well as process simulator at Midrex Technical Center. The combination o FASTMET DRI hot charging and new melting furnace brought high quality molten ironmaking process named as FASTMELT. The processes offer wide variety of productapplicationsandrawmaterialselections including recycle of solid steel mill wastes. High efficiency and productivity promises sound feasibility of FASTMET/FASTMELT processes with the consideration of environmental compatibility for the coming century.
