Domestic steel fundamentals exhibited surprising first-quarter strength, with integrated producers' factory orders reflecting both positive U.S. demand and strong export orders. As further evidence, service center inventories are also characterized as low. Even so, most scrap grades have traded "sideways" with a downward bias since January. Steel's fundamental strength, however, bodes well for processors in the months ahead.
