India has approximately 9.3 percent proven coal resources of the world. Along with other categories, our country had 248 billion tonne of reserves as on January 1, 2006. At the present level of consumption and projected demand from new power stations and heavy industries like steel, cement and fertilizers, the reserves are expected to last for 150 years. Though Indian coal production is expected to touch 1086 mt. by 2024-25, the domestic sector is failing to cut ice with the major coal users, in terms of quality and availability of indigenous coal. As a result international coal suppliers are bullish on the Indian coal market and coal producers in Indonesia, Australia, South Africa and China are ramping up their production and export facilities.
