SAMPE has, for the last few years, been in a strong financial position based largely on its successful conferences and exhibitions in North America and the continuing success in Europe and Japan. However as a membership society we are only as strong as our membership and here the picture is not so good. Even in Europe, which has seen ten years of steady growth, numbers appear to be reaching a plateau at just below 1000 members and in Japan numbers are stabilised at around 400. However the biggest challenge is in the USA where individual memberships have declined slowly, at the same time as we have seen strong increases in corporate sponsorship and exhibition sales.
