SAFETY IS NOT VOLUNTARY

In late 2005,registered volunteer workers in the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia were upset about new safety regulations.Because of federal budgetary restrictions,the forest relies entirely on volunteers to clear and maintain trails.Over the years,volunteers from groups such as the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association,the Georgia Horse Council and the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club have spent thousands of hours in the forest clearing miles of trails for visitors' use.But as much as the Chattahoochee National Forest staff appreciated the tireless work of its volunteers,the edict was clear - safety had to come first.
