Management of Acute Lateral Side Ligament Injuries of the Knee

Injuries to the lateral structures of the knee including the posterolateral corner are less frequent than their medial counterparts, but can often lead to chronic instability if missed or inappropriately managed. Instability leading to abnormal knee kinematics may produce early articular cartilage damage and eventual disability. Isolated injuries are rare, so it is important to check for associated cruciate injuries and have a high index of suspicion for a spontaneously reduced dislocation. Lateral side injuries that are missed inthe acute setting also can lead to increased stress on associated cruciate reconstructions and premature failure.
