This edition of Orthopaedics and Trauma contains a mini-symposium on 'Soft Tissue Surgery in the Knee'. The mini-symposium has aimed to cover some of the most important and most common areas of soft tissue knee surgery, but naturally cannot be comprehensive or exhaustive.The article on 'Biomechanics of the knee joint' covers in a very concise and clear fashion the fundamentals of knee biomechanics as it applies to the soft tissues of the joint. The paper on 'Surgical approaches to the knee joint' should be considered mandatory reading for all orthopaedic surgeons,particularly for the more difficult and dangerous areas of the posterolateral corner and the posterior aspect of the knee.
