Oilsands mining is sometimes viewed as a sunset industry,one using low-tech methods to scrape out the last of a small portion of mining-recoverable resource while industry gets ready for an in situ boom.In reality,this is not the case- while it may be true that only about 20 per cent of Alberta's oilsands are considered economically mineable,there are several decades of new production set to come on stream in the coming years.As well,today's oilsands mine is a highly technical operation,and information technology is set to further increase operational efficiency and decrease environmental impacts in the future.
