Onshore Israel comprises about 21,000 square kilometers, and its Exclusive Economic Zone is 25,000 square kilometers. About 400 wells have been drilled in the country, mainly onshore.Israel distinguishes three levels ol" petroleum rights.The lowest level is the permit, and it gives the owner 18 months to make a fairly superficial reconnaissance of the area, including the acquisition of new seismic data in places where data are lacking. After 18 months, the permit holder must submit a report to the petroleum commissioner that includes recommendations for specific prospects and application for a petroleum license.
