With crude oil hovering near US$100 per barrel and light oil reserves depleting, the oil sands and heavy oil in the WCSB have become increasingly attractive to the energy investor. Heavy oil is, by definition, any oil having an API gravity of less than 22.3 degrees, making it highly viscous and difficult to extract using conventional methods. Some 97% of Canada's oil reserves are heavy, the bulk of which is trapped in the oil sands. Conventional heavy oil production forms a significant proportion of Canada's current oil output.
