As vice-president of sustainability and communications, Arlene Strom's title at Suncor Energy seems to be a somewhat odd pairing of roles. And when you consider the span of her responsibilities— stakeholder and aboriginal relations, brand, communications, sustainability strategy and the management of the Suncor Energy Foundation—you would think Suncor was trying to save money. But you'd be wrong because what's at play is a more holistic understanding of sustainability. After all, this is Suncor, a company whose president and chief executive officer, Steve Williams, stood among industry peers behind the province's new leader, Rachel Notley, when she announced an aggressive climate change plan for Alberta in November.
