While the public face of the oilpatch is sunny on Alberta's climate plan, behind the scenes, there's growing gloom. Canadian Natural Resources Limited, Cenovus Energy, Shell Canada and Suncor Energy offered sweeping support for the Government of Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan in November. The plan calls forthe provincial government to shut down its 18 coal plants by 2030 and implement a $20/ tonne carbon price in January 2017 and a $30/ tonne price in January 2018. The government also introduced an overall oilsands emissions limit of 100 megatonnes/year of carbon compared to the current level of 70 megatonnes.
