Start with the big picture. Look at the depositional systems. Note the structures, the big folds and faults in the landscape. Then do the cores and when you see something of interest, you might be in a position to relate that back to what you've seen in your field wanderings.It's called geology. And while some live or the by core samples, paying only passing attention to what lies above, Paul Bennett built a career on his knack for synthesizing the macro with the micro and presenting a complete picture.
