Social attitudes and legal norms divergegreatly in the MENA area, as does thepace of change and development. Thetide has moved on somewhat since thedays when girls in Gulf countries werenot expected to go to school, but femaleilliteracy nevertheless remains widespread.Geography matters, as women in moreremote and conservative rural areas haveless opportunity to find work or createbusinesses than women based in citiessuch as Amman or Marrakech. Social classalso matters: the servants that allow somewomen to run their businesses do not tendto have the same access to education and jobprospects as their bosses.
