Alan and Pat Firth began collecting in 1973. Over the next 40 years they gathered a collection that encompassed studio pottery, furniture, textiles and jewellery. In total, they had over 500 pieces by 214 makers. Included was a group of over 350 works by leading ceramists, among them Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Alison Britton, Martin Smith and Magdalene Odundo. The Firths lived with their collection, regularly changing the displays, enjoying juxtaposing differing items to create a kind of 'conversation' between works.
