We agree with much of what is said in the article1 by Spong et al, but we disagree that "the goal of labor induction is vaginal delivery." Most providers counsel their patients that the goal of the induction is to deliver a healthy newborn to a healthy mother. The common problem of a postdates pregnancy is a good example. The risk of severe meconium aspiration seems to be decreasing, and this has been attributed to the avoidance of postmaturity.
