Outcome and complications of retropubic and transobturator midurethral slings translated into surgical therapeutic indices
A number of studies have demonstrated that retropubic and obturator tape procedures are equally effective for cure of female stress urinary incontinence at 1 year after surgery. The use of the concept of risk/benefit in incontinence surgery is similar to pharmacology where the therapeutic index represents the ratio of desired effect to toxic effect. The surgical therapeutic index (STI) is the ratio between the cure and complication rate, with a high STI indicating greater safety.
