(If we did not already have enough reasons to try and decrease the rates of primary cesarean deliveries, we now have more. Cesarean delivery rates have continued their inexorable rise during the past decade; the cesarean rate rose by 53% from 1996 to 2007, reaching 32%, the highest rate ever reported in the United States (NCHS data brief no. 35. Hyattsville, MD: National Center for Health Statistics; 2010). Although cesarean delivery is a major surgical procedure with attendant morbidity and mortality, the recipients of such procedures are generally young and healthy, and the procedure is relatively safe.
