The Potters of Muchelney

PERSPECTIVE-AS JIM Robison discovers, the four potters working at Muchelney Pottery make a stimulating quartet. Returning from a pottery demonstration in Devon this summer, I chanced a quick look at the road map and found that a small detour would take me to the Somerset village of Muchelney and the pottery of John Leach. As an American potter arriving on these shores in the early seventies, the fame of the Leach name had taken me on a pilgrimage to the St. Ives home of his grandfather and subsequently to the studio of David Leach, his father, but never to Somerset. Over the years numerous potters had said that John's place was well worth a visit but somehow the distance from our Yorkshire home had prevailed against this. Knowing that there was a new exhibition on show, I thought this was an opportune moment to make a visit.
