Matthew Wilcock is a potter with a natural affinity for clay. Having demonstrated his technical skill as winner of the BBC's The Great Pottery fh row Down last year, he has moved on to explore new materials and firing techniques, and is beginning to find a style of his own. With a second series of the programme coming this autumn, I caught up with Matthew at his studio at Giggleswick School in North Yorkshire, where he is currently Artist in Residence. During our day, what struck me most about Matthew was his freewheeling approach to life. 'I'll pick you up from the train station,' he said; I pictured a car. When I arrived, there he stood with two mountain bikes. Nor did he flinch when photographer Cristian Barnett asked him to stand atop the large rock at Malham Cove for a portrait (opposite), even with a new pot in hand.
