摘要

Bernard Leach once recalled an account he gave to two prospective young students of pottery. He said he would 'talk to them very straight'. After a rathel terrifying (and perhaps a little pompous) summary of the ardour and labour that would be required, he said: 'it means a whole life's work and it means that you must care about it tremendously'. This was a rather more brutal disquisition of Leach's faith in the interconnections of 'hand, heart and head' as a model of life and work. Of course his labours at the Leach Pottery required such structure and underpinning. Leach published this account in The Potter's Challenge, a kind of two-dimensional museum catalogue - an imaginative collection of the best pots he could put together in an imagined vitrine.
