The Origins of Clay

Clay minerals are largely formed by the weathering of rocks, in particular the decomposition of feldspar minerals in those rocks by acidic wafers. A large variety of clay minerals may be formed during the weathering process, depending on the acidity of the percolating waters, permeability of the rock being weathered, type of feldspar minerals present, climatic conditions such as rainfall and temperature, etc.
