Lurking beneath the surface of this symposium was a slippery question: what exactly is ceramics? The audience for this, the second of the Idea & Act strand, explored surface and colour, a healthy mix of youthful students and grizzled campaigners. The latter are well used to the navel-gazing endemic to the discipline - it has been going on for years -but its obstinacy suggests, perhaps, a terminal identity crisis. Can the centre hold? The background noise of the great trees of the ceramics forest - the BA programmes - crashing to the ground, can not help but fuel the anxiety.
