GRAEME WILKIE: TERRAIN

Terrain was an appropriate title for Graeme Wilkie's first solo exhibition since 2000. Working from his studio/gallery complex at Qdos Arts in Lome, Wilkie has operated his anagama kiln since 1997. The design, adapted from one by master kiln builder Hikaru Shimamura, is described by Wilkie as 'candle-flame shape, tapering in on both sides like a sculptural form' (approx. 10 X 2 X 2m), and achieving tremendous combustion. For his annual firing, which lasts six days, Wilkie works with a team of twelve to fifteen people in eight-hour shifts. It is a disciplined and concerted process, particularly this year with some 150 vessels fired, and thirty-five pieces in the exhibition.
