Ups and downs in rubber growers' fortunes

Natural rubber prices in India have gone through many ups and downs, causing serious fluctuations in the fortunes of rubber growers. In the past two decades, India experienced the first boom in rubber prices in the mid-nineties when rubber prices shot up to an annual average of Rs 50.60 in 1995 and Rs 51.20 in 1996. Thereafter, prices kept falling, touching as low as Rs 29.94 in 1999.
