In a 1994 ARVO abstract, Greg Hageman and I detailed that a polysaccharide-binding probe known as peanut agglutinin bound to terminal chondroitin sulfate-containing glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and that disruption of these GAGs extinguished the peanut agglutinin binding and resulted in release of the vitreous adhesion to the lens, the optic disk, and the retinal basal lamina, including the vitreous base. ' We also reported the dose and time ranging data from a series of 56 cynomolgus monkeys. As an example of this complete and total disinsertion, I have shown the vitreous base region from a control cynomolgus monkey in Figure 1 (left) and from a chondroitinase ABC-treated animal in Figure 1 (right). The peanut agglutinin binding is extinguished at the vitreoretinal interface, as illustrated on the right. Note that the retinal surface has no islands of vitreous or residual fibrils.
