The techniques used to establish the diagnostic categories used in the ANCHOR and MARINA trials were established over 20 years ago in the context of the Macular Photocoagulation Study and were based on the only imaging modality available at that time, fluorescein angiography (FA).3-4 A review of this technology and its original application is essential to understanding the limitations of this approach for our present needs. This fluorescein-based classification was applied for the purpose of determining which patients would benefit from thermal laser photocoagulation intended to eradicate the entire neovascular lesion.
