Type II photoinitiators (eg benzophenone, thioxanthones) are compounds whose triplet excited states react with hydrogen donors to produce an initiating radical. Tertiary amines are often incorporated as hydrogen donors and as a means of scavenging peroxy radicals formed by the reaction of oxygen with carbon-based free radicals.
