The importance of staying 'offline'.

When was the last time your radiology department or facility lost Internet capabilities? Do you have offline options? What is your backup plan? Do you have one? Friday, July 3, 2011, began like a typical second shift for our small community hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Emergency department (ED) patients were beginning to line up, inpatients were pending on the work list, and outpatients continued arriving. As I paused to collect my thoughts between patients, the overhead speaker announced that our radiology information system (RIS) was down. After a long and exaggerated grunt from all technologists, we proceeded with our work load.
