摘要

'Frankenfoods' or bio-saviours? Whatever the truth, it's probable that, later this year, ministers will give the go-ahead to GM crops being grown commercially in the UK. Lynn Dicks assesses the possible impacts on our environment. In a survey carriedout last year, 51 per cent of UK farmers said they could see no benefit in going GM. "If I started growing GM maize to feed my cattle, no one would buy my meat," said Devon farmer John Sherrell. There is little market for GM products in Europe. Nestle,Unilever, Heinz and all the major British supermarkets have banned GM in their own products. Three local authorities intend to apply for legal exemption from consents to grow GM crops, preventing farmers, by law, from going GM (and have the full supportoflocal farmers).
