The German Society for Vascular Surgery. History and stories from conception to its 20th birthday

The German Society for Vascular Surgery was founded in December 1984 by eleven resolutely determined vascular surgeons against the opposition of the established surgical societies. Today, 20 years later, the Society has 1,200 members, is successfully engaged in science and professional politics and has gained a national and international reputation and acceptance. The journal Gefasschirurgie (Vascular Surgery) is in its 10th year of publication, in close cooperation with the Societies for Vascular Surgery in Austria and Switzerland. At the European level, representatives of the Society have been and still are deeply engaged in the vascular committees of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS).
