Emerging markets have powered the global economy in recent years, but are now feeling the squeeze as a better outlook for the US leads to expectations of an imminent tightening of US monetary policy. A large-scale outflow of short-term capital from them is leading to sharp exchange rate falls, including in India, Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil; those with large external imbalances are the most vulnerable.
