Vaginal C. albicans infection was experimentally induced in C3H/HeJ, SJL/J, BALB/c, DBA/2J, C57BL/6J and C57BL/10ScSn female, 6- to 8-week-old mice (n=12 per group). The relative vaginal fungal burden was determined weekly and overall susceptibilityof mice was assessed for each strain. SLJ/J mice had the highest fungal burden (P<0.04) compared with other strains. The C57BL/6J mice had the highest percentage of animals colonized over time, but this value was not statistically different from that inthe C57BL/10ScSn strain (P=0.10). The SJL/J mice had a clearance rate equivalent to that of the other strains, despite the fact that SJL/J mice had significantly higher fungal burdens while infected. Complete clearance of infection in all animals by theend of week 8 was only observed in the C57BL/10ScSn strain.
