Polarization of the Lyman–α_1 Line Following the Radiative Recombination of Bare, High-Z Ions

摘要

The radiative recombination of a free electron into the 2p_(3/2) state of bare, highly-charged ions and the subsequent Lyman–α_1 (2p_(3/2) → 1s_(1/2)) decay are studied theoretically. Special attention is paid to the linear polarization of the characteristic X-ray radiation. In particular, it is found that the angular distribution of the Lyman–α_1 line polarization is remarkably modified by the interference between the leading electric dipole E1 decay channel and the – much weaker – magnetic quadrupole M2 term. Relativistic calculations have been carried out for the electron capture into bare uranium ion for a wide range of projectile energies.
