The Department of Defense has had a requirement for vessels to conduct autonomous offloading operations at austere sites—locations without world-class port infrastructure—for years. A very promising solution for this demanding requirement was successfully demonstrated this year via full-scale demonstrations of the Lightweight Modular Causeway System (LMCS) at military installations in Virginia and Hawaii.
