DairycowproductionisanimportantlivestockactivityinthehighlandsofMadagascarandspecificallyintheVakinankaratraregion.Despitetheincreaseofglobalmilkproductionoverthelastdecades,cowproductivityremainslowduetobothquantityandqualityfeedconstraints.ElephantgrassandItalianryegrassarethemostcultivatedforagegrass,duringthewetandwarmseasonandthedryandcoolseason,respectively.Anexperimentunderfieldconditionswascarriedouttoevaluatetheabilityofthesatellite-derivednormalizeddifferencevegetationindex(NDVI)todevelopatoolforestimatingbiomassyieldsofElephantgrassandItalianryegrass.Resultsshowedmoderatetostrongbutsignificantrelationshipbetweenplantheightandbiomassyield(R²=0.64to0.92),betweenNDVIandbiomassyield(R²=0.52to0.73)andbetweenNDVIandplantheight(R²=0.61to0.74)ofElephantgrassandItalianryegrass,respectively.TheseresultssuggestthatNDVIhaspotentialtoprovideatoolfordynamicmonitoringandmanagementofpasturelandforageproduction.
