Domestic violence protection measures

Nurses are often among the first to become aware of domestic abuse within a family. The Department of Health (2013) requires that nurses apply the high-level principles set put in Box 1 when they become aware of domestic abuse. Successful application of those principles equires that nurses keep up to date with the legal provisions that protect and provide a remedy for the victims of domestic abuse. Last month's article considered 'Clare's law'-the domestic violence disclosure scheme (Griffith, 2017). This article considers domestic violence protection orders and domestic violence protection notices under the Crime and Security Act 2010, sections 24-33. Some 1.2 million women suffer domestic abuse annually and over 330 000 women are sexually assaulted (Strickland and Allen, 2017). Domestic violence accounts for around 11 of all violent incidents reported to the police in England and Wales (Office for National Statistics (ONS),2016) and frequently occurs to the same victim more than once (Strickland, 2013). Of those people who were the victims of domestic abuse in 2015-16, 30 were involved in repeat incidents (ONS, 2017a).
